A Day in the Life
You teach students with physical, intellectual, sensory, or developmental disabilities in a special education school, resource room, or inclusive classroom, adapting instruction to meet each student's individual educational needs.
- Deliver individualised lessons aligned to students' IEP (Individual Education Plan) goals
- Adapt curriculum content, teaching methods, and materials for diverse disability types
- Conduct functional assessments and update IEP targets
- Implement behaviour support strategies and positive behaviour management
- Use assistive technology and adapted learning materials
- Collaborate with speech therapists, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists
- Communicate with parents and caregivers on student progress and home support strategies
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, interventions, and incident reports
Work Environment
Special education school, resource room within a regular school, or inclusive classroom. Sri Lanka has government special schools for students with visual impairment (Ratmalana), hearing impairment (Ratmalana), intellectual disability, and physical disability. The National Institute of Special Education (NISE) provides training. NGO-run schools (Crippled Children's Society, Motivation) supplement government provision.
