Teaching Tamil language and literature in government or private schools.
A Day in the Life
You teach Tamil language skills — reading, writing, speaking, and listening — at school or institute level, supporting both first-language Tamil students and second-language learners in developing Tamil proficiency.
- Plan and deliver Tamil language lessons covering grammar, composition, and oral skills
- Teach Tamil script, vocabulary, and sentence construction
- Prepare students for O/L Tamil language examinations
- Conduct composition writing workshops including essays, letters, and creative writing
- Support Tamil as a second language (Tamil II) learners in Sinhala-medium schools
- Assess written and oral Tamil proficiency
- Promote appreciation of Tamil literary and cultural heritage
- Participate in NIE in-service education for Tamil language teachers
Work Environment
Classroom at a government school, private school, or Tamil medium school. Tamil is an official language of Sri Lanka and spoken by approximately 25% of the population (Sri Lankan Tamils and Moors). Tamil-medium schools are concentrated in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Tamil as a second language is offered in Sinhala-medium schools under national reconciliation language policy.
