Teaching Islamic studies and history in government schools.
A Day in the Life
You teach Islamic Studies at a government school in Sri Lanka, covering the pillars of Islam, Quranic recitation, Islamic history, and moral education to Muslim students as part of the national religion curriculum.
- Plan and deliver Islamic Studies lessons following the national curriculum (Ministry of Education / Islamic Studies syllabus)
- Teach Quranic recitation (Tajweed basics), pillars of Islam, and Islamic jurisprudence
- Cover Islamic history from the life of the Prophet Muhammad to contemporary periods
- Deliver moral education content grounded in Islamic values
- Prepare students for O/L Islamic Studies examinations
- Coordinate with Muslim community and mosque representatives for co-curricular activities
- Observe religious calendar events and guide school-level commemorations
- Provide pastoral support to Muslim students in relation to religious observance at school
Work Environment
Government school classroom, particularly in Muslim-majority areas such as Eastern Province (Ampara, Batticaloa), Colombo's Muslim communities, Puttalam, and Kandy. Sri Lanka has a significant Muslim population (approximately 10%) and the government school system provides religious instruction in Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Christianity respectively.
