A Day in the Life
You teach Sinhala language and literature at a government school, developing students' proficiency in reading, writing, and oral communication in Sinhala, preparing them for O/L and A/L examinations.
- Deliver Sinhala language lessons covering grammar, composition, and oral skills
- Teach Sinhala literature — poetry, prose, and drama at O/L and A/L levels
- Prepare students for O/L Sinhala and A/L Sinhala examinations
- Conduct composition writing workshops including essays, letters, and narrative writing
- Assess written work, oral presentations, and examination performance
- Develop love for Sinhala language and literature among students
- Coordinate Sinhala cultural and literary events at school
- Participate in NIE in-service education for Sinhala language teachers
Work Environment
Government school classroom. Sinhala is the first language of approximately 74% of Sri Lanka's population and a mandatory subject for Sinhala-medium students throughout schooling. Sinhala literature includes a rich tradition of poetry (Gunadasa Amarasekara, Martin Wickramasinghe), prose, and theatre. Government schools require qualified Sinhala teachers at all grade levels.
