A Day in the Life
You teach classical languages and literature — primarily Sinhala classical literature, Pali, Sanskrit, or Tamil classical texts — at school or university level, preserving and transmitting Sri Lanka's linguistic and literary heritage.
- Teach classical language reading, grammar, and textual analysis
- Guide students through canonical classical texts — Sinhala, Pali, Sanskrit or Tamil literature
- Contextualise classical literature within Sri Lankan and broader South Asian cultural history
- Prepare students for O/L and A/L classical language and literature examinations
- Supervise student research papers and presentations on classical texts
- Conduct textual criticism and philological analysis sessions
- Maintain connections with Buddhist or Hindu educational institutions as relevant
- Organise cultural events celebrating classical literary heritage
Work Environment
Secondary school or university department specialising in classical studies. In Sri Lanka, classical Sinhala literature, Pali, and Sanskrit are taught at National Schools and universities (University of Peradeniya, University of Colombo, University of Kelaniya Sinhala department). Tamil classical studies are taught in Northern and Eastern provincial schools and universities.
