A Day in the Life
You teach Home Economics at a government school, covering food science and nutrition, clothing and textiles, family studies, consumer education, and household management to junior and senior secondary students.
- Plan and deliver Home Economics lessons across food, textiles, and family studies units
- Conduct practical laboratory sessions — cooking, sewing, baking, and nutrition tasks
- Prepare students for O/L Home Economics examinations
- Manage and maintain the home economics laboratory, equipment, and consumables
- Assess practical work, food presentations, and written examination components
- Teach nutrition, meal planning, and budgeting concepts relevant to Sri Lankan households
- Guide students through garment construction and textile design projects
- Participate in school co-curricular activities and inter-school cooking competitions
Work Environment
Classroom and home economics laboratory at a government school. Home Economics is offered as an O/L elective in Sri Lanka and has traditionally been more popular in girls' schools, though it is now coeducational in policy. Many government schools have dedicated home economics rooms with cooking equipment, sewing machines, and food preparation facilities, though resource levels vary widely.
