A Day in the Life

You teach Sociology at A/L level or university, covering social theory, research methods, social institutions, stratification, and Sri Lankan social issues, developing students' sociological imagination and analytical skills.

  • Plan and deliver A/L Sociology or university Social Sciences modules
  • Teach sociological theory (Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Giddens) and contemporary perspectives
  • Cover social institutions — family, education, religion, media, state — through sociological lenses
  • Teach social stratification, inequality, gender, ethnicity, and class in the Sri Lankan context
  • Prepare students for A/L Sociology examinations or university assessments
  • Guide sociological research methodology and introduce students to fieldwork
  • Set and mark structured essays, data response questions, and sociological reports
  • Facilitate discussion on contemporary Sri Lankan social issues

Work Environment

A/L classroom or university lecture theatre. Sociology is offered as an A/L subject in Sri Lanka's Arts stream and at degree level at universities including Colombo, Kelaniya, Peradeniya, Eastern, and Jaffna. Interest is driven by students pursuing social work, law, public administration, journalism, and development roles.
