Teaching Pali language and Buddhist civilization in government schools.
A Day in the Life
You teach Pali language and Buddhist Studies at a government school, covering the Pali canon, Buddhist philosophy, the life of the Buddha, and dhamma principles as part of Sri Lanka's national religion curriculum.
- Deliver Pali language and Buddhist Studies lessons according to the national curriculum
- Teach Pali grammar, vocabulary, and text reading (Dhammapada, Jataka stories)
- Cover Buddhist philosophy — the Four Noble Truths, Eightfold Path, dependent origination
- Teach the life of the Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) and the spread of Buddhism in Sri Lanka
- Prepare students for O/L and A/L Buddhist Studies and Pali examinations
- Guide dhamma practice and meditation instruction where appropriate
- Coordinate with school principal for Vesak, Poson, and other Buddhist observance events
- Participate in NIE in-service education for religion teachers
Work Environment
Government school classroom, serving the predominantly Sinhala Buddhist student population. Buddhism is the religion of approximately 70% of Sri Lanka's population, making Buddhist Studies one of the most widely taught religion subjects in government schools. Pali language is taught as a classical language connected to Theravada Buddhist scripture.
