About This Role
Controls entry and departure of persons at Sri Lanka's ports — airports (BIA, MRI), and sea ports. Issues visas, endorses passports, and detects document fraud. Department of Immigration & Emigration recruits via PSC exam. Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system management is a growing technical responsibility.
A Day in the Life
An Immigration & Emigration Officer's day involves processing travelers at ports of entry, verifying documents, issuing visas, and ensuring compliance with immigration laws. It requires keen attention to detail, strong observational skills, and the ability to handle both routine and complex cases, including potential fraud detection.
- Inspect passports, visas, and other travel documents for authenticity and validity
- Interview travelers to determine admissibility and purpose of visit
- Process arrivals and departures using electronic systems (e.g., ETA)
- Detect and investigate cases of document fraud, illegal entry, or overstaying
- Issue and endorse visas and permits according to regulations
- Respond to inquiries from the public and other government agencies
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports on immigration activities
