About This Role
Responds to fires, road accidents, industrial disasters, and search-and-rescue operations. Employed by the Sri Lanka Fire & Rescue Service (under Local Government), Colombo Municipal Council Fire Brigade, or industrial fire brigades (airport, port, oil storage). Physical fitness standards are mandatory. NFPA-certified training preferred.
A Day in the Life
A Fire & Rescue Officer's day is highly unpredictable, ranging from routine equipment checks and training drills to immediate, high-stress responses to emergencies like building fires, road accidents, or industrial incidents. Teamwork and quick decision-making are paramount.
- Inspect and maintain fire fighting equipment, vehicles, and personal protective gear
- Participate in physical fitness training and drills to maintain readiness
- Attend to emergency calls, including fire suppression, rescue operations, and hazardous material incidents
- Conduct fire safety inspections and public awareness programs
- Provide first aid and emergency medical assistance at incident scenes
- Operate specialized equipment such as hydraulic rescue tools, breathing apparatus, and high-pressure hoses
- Complete incident reports and maintain accurate records of operations
Work Environment
Work involves a mix of station-based duties (training, maintenance) and highly dynamic, often dangerous, outdoor environments during emergencies. Exposure to smoke, hazardous materials, extreme temperatures, and stressful situations is common.
