About This Role
Teaches non-native speakers how to read, write, and speak a foreign language in academic or professional settings.
A Day in the Life
You teach a foreign language — such as French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Korean, or Arabic — at a language institute, school, or university, developing students' communicative proficiency from beginner to advanced levels.
- Plan and deliver language lessons covering speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills
- Teach grammar structures, vocabulary, and cultural context of the target language
- Prepare students for internationally recognised language examinations (DELF, Goethe, JLPT, HSK)
- Create or adapt teaching materials including audio, video, and written resources
- Conduct oral assessments and language proficiency evaluations
- Provide feedback on pronunciation, fluency, and written accuracy
- Organise cultural exchange activities, film screenings, or conversation clubs
- Track student progression and adjust teaching pace accordingly
Work Environment
Language institute, cultural centre, private school, or university language department. Sri Lanka has active French (Alliance Française), German (Goethe-Institut), and Japanese (Japan Cultural Centre) institutes in Colombo. Korean and Mandarin instruction has grown in recent years driven by migration and business interest. University departments at Colombo, Kelaniya, and Peradeniya offer French, German, and Japanese courses.
