A Day in the Life
You teach English language and/or literature at secondary school or tertiary level, delivering structured lessons, conducting tutorials, and assessing students' language and analytical writing skills.
- Deliver English language and/or literature lessons at O/L, A/L, or undergraduate level
- Set and mark assignments, essays, and examinations
- Conduct small-group tutorials and writing workshops
- Design semester or term plans aligned with curriculum requirements
- Provide written and oral feedback to improve academic writing
- Advise students on essay structure, argument development, and language accuracy
- Participate in departmental meetings, curriculum reviews, and moderation panels
- Engage in professional development and academic reading in the discipline
Work Environment
Classroom or lecture hall setting at a national school, private school, international school, or university. University lecturers in Sri Lanka are based at state universities (Colombo, Kelaniya, Peradeniya) or private degree-awarding institutions (SLIIT, NSBM, IIT). Some positions require research output alongside teaching.
