Acts as a bridge between management and employees, handling grievances, disputes, and labor union negotiations.
A Day in the Life
Manage the relationship between the organisation and its employees — handling grievances, disciplinary cases, policy interpretation, and collective employee issues to maintain a fair, compliant, and harmonious workplace.
- Investigate employee grievances and conduct formal grievance hearings
- Manage disciplinary investigations and chair or advise on disciplinary panels
- Advise HR managers and line managers on employment law and HR policy application
- Monitor and manage employee morale indicators and early warning signs
- Maintain relationship with trade unions and manage union consultation where applicable
- Review and update HR policies to reflect current legislation and best practice
- Handle employment tribunal and labour department matters
- Coach managers on handling difficult employee conversations and performance issues
Work Environment
HR function specialist role, most common in large organisations with significant employee headcounts. In Sri Lanka, ER Specialists are most active in manufacturing companies (garment industry, FMCG), banks, telcos, government bodies, and organisations with unionised workforces. The role works closely with the HR Manager and legal counsel.
