About This Role
Cares for animals at Dehiwala Zoological Gardens (Sri Lanka's national zoo, over 3,000 animals) or the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Feeds animals, monitors health, maintains enclosures, and assists with breeding programmes. NVQ in animal care or DAPH diploma. Sri Lanka is one of few countries with a wild elephant orphanage — iconic career.
A Day in the Life
A Zoo Keeper or Wildlife Keeper's day is dedicated to the direct care and welfare of animals in captivity. This includes feeding, cleaning enclosures, observing animal behavior, and assisting with veterinary care and enrichment programs.
- Prepare and distribute diets according to specific animal requirements
- Clean and maintain animal enclosures, ensuring hygiene and safety
- Observe animal behavior and health, reporting any changes to senior staff or veterinarians
- Provide environmental enrichment to stimulate animals physically and mentally
- Assist veterinarians with medical procedures, treatments, and animal restraint
- Monitor breeding programs and assist with neonate care
- Educate visitors about the animals and conservation efforts
- Maintain detailed records of animal care, feeding, and health
Work Environment
Work is primarily outdoors and indoors within animal enclosures, exposed to various weather conditions, animal waste, and strong odors. It can be physically demanding and requires constant vigilance for safety.
