About This Role
Manages commercial broiler or layer poultry farms — flock health, feed management, biosecurity, and production targets. Sri Lanka consumes approximately 1 million broiler chickens per week. Key employers: Crysbro, Prima Chicks, Bairaha Farms, Jaffna Poultry. NVQ in poultry production or BSc Animal Science.
A Day in the Life
A Poultry Farm Manager's day is highly structured and focused on maintaining optimal conditions for poultry production. This includes rigorous biosecurity, feed management, health monitoring, and ensuring environmental controls for the flock, whether broiler or layer.
- Oversee daily feeding and watering schedules for poultry flocks
- Implement and enforce strict biosecurity protocols to prevent disease
- Monitor flock health, identify signs of illness, and administer basic treatments
- Manage environmental controls (temperature, ventilation, lighting) in poultry houses
- Supervise farm staff, including training and task allocation
- Manage feed inventory, ordering, and quality control
- Record production data (egg lay, growth rates, mortality) and analyze performance
- Coordinate with veterinarians for health programs and disease outbreaks
Work Environment
