Structural Steel Worker is for those who want to build on a massive scale — the skyscrapers, bridges, and industrial structures that define modern Sri Lanka. It requires physical courage, strength, and team coordination. The work is highly visible and commands respect. For those who want to transition to team leadership, running a subcontracting gang provides entrepreneurial independence. Gulf construction projects offer transformative income for experienced ironworkers.”
A Day in the Life
You erect structural steel frameworks for buildings, bridges, and industrial structures — handling, lifting, aligning, and bolting or pinning steel members safely at height on construction sites.
- Unload, sort, and organise structural steel members on site using crane signals
- Climb and work at height to receive and position steel beams, columns, and trusses
- Align steel members using levels, plumb bobs, and measuring tapes
- Secure temporary connections using drift pins and erection bolts
- Guide crane movements by hand signal or radio to position heavy steel elements
- Torque structural bolts to specified tension values using torque wrenches
- Perform minor grinding and surface preparation at connection points
- Maintain safe working at height — tie-off, safety nets, and fall arrest equipment
Work Environment
High-rise construction sites, bridge erection projects, industrial plant construction, and large span roof structures. In Sri Lanka, structural steelwork is concentrated in Colombo's growing high-rise sector (Port City, Rajagiriya, Nawala), highway bridge construction, and industrial building projects. It is physically demanding outdoor work at height.
Typical hours: 54h/week · WLB score 4/10 · COMMON overtime
Long hours on construction sites are standard. Extreme summer heat (March–May) makes outdoor high-rise work particularly demanding. Site-based work often involves travel away from home.
