Teaching Sanskrit language and literature in government schools and Pirivenas.
A Day in the Life
You teach Sanskrit as a classical language at a government school in Sri Lanka, delivering the national A/L Sanskrit curriculum to students pursuing classical language studies, Hindu studies, or academic linguistics.
- Plan and deliver A/L Sanskrit lessons following the national curriculum
- Teach Sanskrit grammar, vocabulary, and classical text reading
- Prepare students for A/L Sanskrit examinations set by the Department of Examinations
- Cover classical Sanskrit literature relevant to the syllabus
- Design and mark translation exercises, grammar tests, and essay assessments
- Guide students in understanding Sanskrit's role in Sri Lankan cultural and religious heritage
- Participate in NIE in-service education and subject teacher workshops
- Support school-level classical language and cultural events
Work Environment
Government school classroom, primarily at A/L level. Sanskrit teaching in government schools is concentrated in schools with significant Hindu student populations (Northern Province, Colombo) and in schools offering Classical Language A/L streams. The subject has a small but stable student base driven primarily by Tamil Hindu students.
