A Day in the Life
You design, program, integrate, and maintain industrial robots and autonomous systems — enabling factories and laboratories to automate assembly, welding, material handling, inspection, and other repetitive or precision tasks.
- Program industrial robot arms (offline and online teaching/programming)
- Design and implement robot cell layouts and end-of-arm tooling (EOAT)
- Integrate robots with PLCs, vision systems, and conveyors
- Commission and test robot cell programs including safety interlocks
- Diagnose and repair robot mechanical, electrical, and software faults
- Maintain robot preventive maintenance schedules (lubrication, calibration, battery)
- Train production operators and maintenance technicians on robot operation
- Evaluate and specify new robot systems for automation projects

Engineering office and industrial robot cell — split between desk-based programming and factory floor implementation. Robotics specialists in Sri Lanka work primarily for BOI manufacturers, defence technology entities, and the small but growing local automation industry. University laboratories at UoM and SLIIT are training grounds.
