Refrigeration Engineer is a technically demanding but highly rewarding specialisation. You are the person who makes Sri Lanka's food cold chain work — ensuring that the supermarket produce is safe, the pharmaceuticals are stored correctly, and the hotel kitchens stay cold. The qualification is rare and the salary reflects that scarcity. With growing cold chain demand and environmental regulations driving refrigerant technology change, this career becomes more important every year.”
A Day in the Life
You design, specify, install, and maintain commercial and industrial refrigeration systems — from supermarket display cases and cold store rooms to industrial blast freezers and food processing refrigeration.
- Design commercial refrigeration systems — load calculations, equipment selection, piping layout
- Specify refrigeration systems for cold storage, food processing, and display case applications
- Supervise installation of rack refrigeration systems, condensing units, and evaporator circuits
- Commission complete refrigeration systems — charge refrigerant, set pressure controls, verify temperatures
- Diagnose complex refrigeration system faults — compressor issues, expansion valve problems, refrigerant charge
- Prepare technical proposals and cost estimates for refrigeration projects
- Conduct planned maintenance on commercial refrigeration plant
- Ensure compliance with refrigerant regulations and environmental standards
Work Environment
Commercial and industrial refrigeration environments — supermarkets, cold stores, food processing plants, pharmaceutical cold rooms, and hotel kitchen refrigeration. In Sri Lanka, refrigeration engineers work with Cargills Food City, Keells Super, Lanka Canneries, Lanka Milk Foods (Ambewela), and large hotel and hospital chains.
Typical hours: 48h/week · WLB score 6/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
More structured hours at engineering level than technician level. Emergency response for cold store failures does occur — temperature-sensitive goods create urgency.
