Pressure vessel welder

MEDIUM DemandLOW AI RiskSTABLE in SL

Pressure Vessel Welder is for the perfectionist welder who wants to work at the highest technical and quality standard in the profession. Every joint you weld holds immense pressure — your skill is the difference between safe operation and catastrophe. That responsibility commands exceptional pay and elite professional recognition. With ASME certification, the world's highest-paying welding opportunities are open to you.

A Day in the Life

You fabricate and weld pressure-containing equipment — boilers, tanks, heat exchangers, and pipework — to strict ASME or EN code standards where weld quality is life-critical and every joint is tested.

  • Weld pressure vessel shells, heads, nozzles, and flanges to ASME Section VIII Division 1
  • Perform GTAW (TIG) root passes on pressure pipe and vessel nozzle connections
  • Weld to specified welding procedure specifications (WPS) — parameters, preheat, interpass temperature
  • Co-operate with Authorised Inspector (AI) for weld inspection and third-party audit
  • Perform post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) preparation and record keeping
  • Maintain welder performance qualification records (WPQ) up to date
  • Carry out pressure test preparation and assist during hydraulic pressure tests
  • Achieve near-zero reject rate — radiographic testing reveals all flaws

Work Environment

FIELDTeam: SMALLUNIFORMRemote: NONE

Pressure vessel fabrication workshop or process plant maintenance. In Sri Lanka, pressure vessel welders work at boiler manufacturers, chemical processing plants, petroleum storage facilities, and CEB power stations. Internationally, they work in petrochemical plants, LNG facilities, and power generation across the Gulf.

Typical hours: 48h/week · WLB score 6/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime

Pressure vessel fabrication has more structured hours than construction site welding. International plant shutdown work involves intensive periods with significant overtime.

Market Outlook

STABLE

Limited but consistent demand within Sri Lanka — mainly CEB power plants, petroleum industry, and some chemical processing. Most ASME-qualified pressure vessel welders from SL work overseas. The local market for this certification is small but specialised.

Burnout Risk

LOW

Job Security (SL)

HIGH

Automated orbital welding exists for pipe-to-pipe joints but complex vessel nozzle connections, repairs, and out-of-position work on large equipment still require skilled human welders. ASME-coded work requires qualified human welders for certification compliance.

Burnout Causes

Psychological pressure of zero-defect requirementRT film rejection rate is demoralising if highIntensive plant shutdown work periods

Physical Health Risks

Fume inhalation from stainless and alloy steelsChromium hexavalent exposure risk (stainless steel welding)Burns and UV radiation from arcConfined space work on vessel internals

Mental Health Risks

Zero-defect pressure from inspectors and code complianceCareer anxiety if qualification lapses

How to Mitigate

  • ASME Section IX is the global passport to premium welding employment — pursue it as the primary career goal
  • Transition to Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) for maximum earning at reduced physical strain
  • Gulf petrochem projects offer the highest rates for ASME-coded pressure vessel welders

Is This Career For You?

Experienced certified welders (5+ years) who are detail-oriented, quality-focused, and motivated by mastery and premium earnings rather than volume output.

What You'll Love

  • One of the highest-paid welding specialisations globally
  • ASME qualification is internationally portable
  • Elite technical status within the welding profession
  • Gulf opportunities are very strong for ASME-qualified welders

What's Challenging

  • Zero tolerance for weld defects — radiographic rejection is costly and demoralising
  • Requires many years of prior welding experience
  • Certification maintenance adds career complexity
