A Day in the Life
You teach geography — physical, human, and environmental — at secondary school or university level, developing students' understanding of spatial relationships, natural systems, and societal patterns.
- Plan and deliver geography lessons covering physical, human, and environmental topics
- Conduct map reading, GIS exercises, and field observation activities
- Prepare students for O/L and A/L Geography examinations
- Set and mark assignments, map-based tasks, and structured essays
- Conduct field trips to geographic sites (rivers, coastal areas, agricultural zones)
- Teach data interpretation — climate graphs, population pyramids, land use maps
- Participate in departmental planning and curriculum meetings
- Update lesson content with current environmental and geographic events
Work Environment
Classroom-based role at a government or private school, with occasional outdoor field components. Sri Lanka's A/L Geography syllabus covers topics relevant to the island — monsoons, river systems, plantation agriculture, urbanisation, and coastal erosion — making local geography contextually rich. University geography departments at Colombo, Kelaniya, Peradeniya, and Ruhuna also employ geography lecturers.
