Metal Fabricator is a core skilled trade that turns raw steel into the structures and equipment that Sri Lanka's construction and industry rely on. If you enjoy working with your hands, reading drawings, and seeing a finished product emerge from raw metal, fabrication is deeply satisfying. Combined with welding certification, it offers one of the strongest wage trajectories in the skilled trades.”
A Day in the Life
You cut, shape, and assemble metal components and structures in a fabrication shop — producing steel frames, brackets, tanks, platforms, and bespoke metalwork from engineering drawings to exact specifications.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and fabrication specifications
- Mark out material for cutting — steel plate, sections, tubes, and pipes
- Cut material using plasma cutter, angle grinder, and cutting torch
- Bend and form steel using press brakes and rollers
- Tack-weld and assemble components into structures for full welding
- Check dimensions and squareness using measuring tools and squares
- Apply full welds (SMAW/MIG) to fabricated assemblies
- Grind and finish welds and surfaces for quality and appearance
