Metal Fabricator is a core skilled trade that turns raw steel into the structures and equipment that Sri Lanka's construction and industry rely on. If you enjoy working with your hands, reading drawings, and seeing a finished product emerge from raw metal, fabrication is deeply satisfying. Combined with welding certification, it offers one of the strongest wage trajectories in the skilled trades.

A Day in the Life

You cut, shape, and assemble metal components and structures in a fabrication shop — producing steel frames, brackets, tanks, platforms, and bespoke metalwork from engineering drawings to exact specifications.

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and fabrication specifications
  • Mark out material for cutting — steel plate, sections, tubes, and pipes
  • Cut material using plasma cutter, angle grinder, and cutting torch
  • Bend and form steel using press brakes and rollers
  • Tack-weld and assemble components into structures for full welding
  • Check dimensions and squareness using measuring tools and squares
  • Apply full welds (SMAW/MIG) to fabricated assemblies
  • Grind and finish welds and surfaces for quality and appearance

Work Environment

FIELDTeam: SMALLUNIFORMRemote: NONE

Steel fabrication workshop — ranges from small job shops to large industrial fabricators supplying construction, engineering, and export markets. In Sri Lanka, fabrication shops are concentrated in Ekala, Ratmalana, Wellampitiya, and Gampaha industrial zones. Produce structural steel, process equipment, architectural metalwork, and agricultural structures.

Typical hours: 50h/week · WLB score 5/10 · COMMON overtime

Workshop fabrication has more regular hours than site welding, but production deadline pressure creates regular overtime. Saturday work is common in busy fabrication shops.

CNC plasma and laser cutting automates some layout and cutting work. However, complex assembly, fit-up, and bespoke fabrication still require skilled human fabricators. Those who also weld are most secure.

Burnout Causes

Physical demands of cutting, grinding, and weldingHeat in fabrication workshopsProduction deadline pressureNoise and fume exposure over time

Physical Health Risks

Metal dust and fume inhalationBurns from cutting and weldingHearing damage from grinding noiseEye hazards from cutting sparks and welding flashCrush hazard from heavy steel sections

Mental Health Risks

Production pressure and dimensional accuracy stressMonotony of repeated production runs

How to Mitigate

  • Develop both fabrication and certified welding skills — the combination commands premium wages
  • Learn CNC plasma cutting operation to stay relevant as technology advances
  • Gulf fabrication companies pay 3–4x SL wages for experienced fabricators
