A Day in the Life
You set up and operate CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines to cut, drill, mill, or turn metal parts to precise specifications, reading engineering drawings and programming or running G-code programs.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and CAD files
- Set up CNC machine tools — select cutting tools, fixtures, and workholding
- Load or write G-code programs for machining operations
- Set machine parameters — speed, feed rate, depth of cut
- Monitor machine operation and adjust for tool wear or dimension drift
- Inspect machined parts using measuring instruments (micrometer, vernier, CMM)
- Perform tool changes and maintain machine lubrication and coolant systems
- Record production output and quality control measurements

CNC machine shop — industrial indoor environment with CNC milling machines, turning centres, and precision measurement stations. Loud, oil-mist environment requiring ear and eye protection. In Sri Lanka, CNC machining operations are concentrated in the Free Trade Zones (Biyagama, Katunayake) and manufacturing companies serving export markets.
