AC Technician is a step above the basic mechanic — you work on complex commercial systems in hotels, hospitals, and high-rises. The role commands significantly higher pay and offers a realistic pathway to Gulf employment or running your own MEP servicing business. For trades people who enjoy technical complexity and want to advance beyond residential service work, this is a strong career.”
A Day in the Life
You handle more complex AC systems — including central AC, VRF/VRV systems, chillers, and building management system (BMS) integration — performing advanced diagnostics, commissioning, and technical supervision.
- Commission VRF/VRV multi-split systems and central AC plant rooms
- Configure BMS (Building Management System) control parameters for AC zones
- Perform advanced refrigerant system analysis using digital manifold gauges
- Diagnose complex electrical and mechanical faults in chiller units and AHUs
- Prepare technical service reports and commissioning documentation
- Supervise and guide junior AC mechanics on site
- Carry out preventive maintenance contracts for large commercial buildings and hospitals
- Coordinate with project engineers and MEP consultants on new installations
Work Environment
Commercial and industrial environments — office towers, hospitals, hotels, factories, and data centres. Works with complex centralised systems rather than individual split units. In Sri Lanka, employed by MEP contracting companies, large hotel groups, and facility management companies operating high-rise commercial buildings.
Typical hours: 48h/week · WLB score 6/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Maintenance contract work has predictable hours. Emergency call-outs for critical systems (hospitals, data centres) occur but are less frequent than for residential mechanics.
