Teaching Tamil language and literature in government schools.
A Day in the Life
You teach Tamil language and literature at a government school in Sri Lanka, delivering the national Tamil medium curriculum to Tamil-speaking students and preparing them for O/L and A/L Tamil examinations.
- Deliver Tamil language and literature lessons in Tamil-medium government schools
- Teach Tamil grammar, prose, poetry, and drama at O/L and A/L levels
- Prepare students for O/L Tamil Language and Literature and A/L Tamil examinations
- Conduct essay and composition writing workshops
- Mark and provide feedback on written assignments and examination papers
- Develop appreciation for classical and modern Tamil literature
- Coordinate Tamil cultural and literary events at school (Tamil Thai Pongal, Tamil Language Week)
- Participate in NIE in-service education programmes for Tamil medium teachers
Work Environment
Tamil-medium government school, primarily in the Northern Province (Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu), Eastern Province (Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara), and Tamil community schools in Colombo, Nuwara Eliya, and estate sector. Tamil is one of Sri Lanka's two official languages, and the government provides Tamil-medium education from primary through university level.
