A Day in the Life
You advise small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on business strategy, operations, finance, and growth — helping them solve specific business problems and improve performance.
- Conduct business diagnostics and needs assessments with SME clients
- Develop business improvement plans covering strategy, operations, and finance
- Facilitate workshops with SME management teams on growth and transformation
- Prepare business reports, proposals, and implementation roadmaps
- Advise on access to finance — loan applications, investor presentations, grant proposals
- Monitor implementation of recommendations and provide follow-up coaching
- Develop marketing, pricing, and sales strategies for client businesses
- Connect SMEs with relevant government support programmes and business development services
Work Environment
Flexible, client-facing role — often working from client premises across Colombo and provincial towns. May operate through a consulting firm, NGO business development programme, or as an independent consultant. In Sri Lanka, major clients include BOI-registered SMEs, export businesses, and businesses supported by EDB (Export Development Board) and DIMO.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
