About This Role
Grassroots-level government officer implementing the Samurdhi (Divineguma) poverty reduction programme. Identifies eligible beneficiaries, manages samurdhi bank societies, facilitates micro-loans, and coordinates livelihood development activities in their assigned area. Competitive PSC examination entry. Deployed island-wide, including remote areas. Over 20,000 Samurdhi officers serve Sri Lanka.
A Day in the Life
A Samurdhi Development Officer's day is highly dynamic and community-focused, spent primarily in the field within their assigned Grama Niladhari division. They identify and support Samurdhi beneficiaries, manage Samurdhi bank societies, facilitate micro-loans, and coordinate various livelihood development activities, acting as a crucial link between the government and the most vulnerable communities.
- Conduct household surveys to identify eligible Samurdhi beneficiaries and assess their needs.
- Manage the operations of Samurdhi bank societies, including savings mobilization and loan disbursement.
- Facilitate micro-loan applications and ensure timely repayment from beneficiaries.
- Coordinate and implement livelihood development programs (e.g., agriculture, small business).
- Provide guidance and support to Samurdhi families on nutrition, health, and education.
- Organize community meetings and awareness programs on government welfare schemes.
- Maintain accurate records of beneficiaries, financial transactions, and program activities.
- Collaborate with other government agencies and NGOs for integrated development efforts.
Work Environment
The work environment is predominantly in the field, within rural and remote communities. It requires extensive travel within the assigned area, often interacting with diverse socio-economic groups. The role is highly independent but requires strong community engagement and problem-solving skills.
