A Day in the Life
You teach Religious Studies at a government school in Sri Lanka, delivering instruction in your assigned religion (Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, or Christianity) as part of the mandatory religion component of the national curriculum.
- Plan and deliver Religious Studies lessons in the assigned religion
- Teach foundational doctrine, scripture, religious history, and moral education
- Prepare students for O/L Religious Studies examinations
- Guide observance of religious calendar events at school level
- Provide pastoral and moral guidance to students from the respective faith community
- Liaise with religious community leaders (temples, mosques, churches) for school programmes
- Participate in NIE in-service training for religion teachers
- Maintain respectful and inclusive practices across faith traditions in the school community
Work Environment
Government school classroom. Sri Lanka's national curriculum mandates religion instruction for all students in their own faith tradition. Schools appoint qualified teachers for Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity respectively. This role covers the broad "Religious Teacher (Govt)" designation applicable across all four major religions.
