A Day in the Life
You lead a team of R&D scientists and technologists in developing new products from concept to launch — managing the innovation pipeline, overseeing formulation and testing, coordinating with marketing and manufacturing, and ensuring products meet regulatory and quality standards.
- Lead team briefings and review progress across active product development projects
- Manage the product development pipeline from ideation through to commercial launch
- Oversee formulation, prototype development, and iterative testing of new products
- Coordinate with marketing on product brief, concept validation, and consumer testing
- Liaise with manufacturing on scale-up, process feasibility, and cost targets
- Ensure all new products meet regulatory, food safety, or quality standards (ISO, SLS)
- Review technical documentation, formulation records, and trial reports
- Manage R&D budget allocation across projects and team resources
- Coach and mentor R&D scientists and technologists in the team
- Present new product pipeline and development updates to senior management
Work Environment
R&D laboratory and development kitchen or pilot plant environment. Splits time between lab oversight, meetings with marketing and manufacturing, and project management. In Sri Lanka, primarily in FMCG (Hemas, Unilever, Nestle, CBL), pharmaceutical (Delmege, CIC Agri), and food manufacturing companies.
Typical hours: 48h/week · WLB score 6/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Good balance most of the year, with intense periods during product launch deadlines, consumer testing campaigns, or regulatory submission timelines. Lab-based roles can require early starts for certain processes.
