A Day in the Life
A Port Operations Officer oversees and coordinates the day-to-day activities within a port, ensuring the smooth and safe movement of vessels, cargo, and personnel. This involves managing berth allocation, vessel traffic, cargo handling equipment, and responding to operational incidents.
- Allocate berths and anchorages to arriving vessels based on schedules and cargo types.
- Monitor vessel traffic within the port and approach channels using VTS (Vessel Traffic Service).
- Coordinate with pilots, tugboats, and linesmen for safe vessel maneuvering.
- Supervise cargo handling operations, including loading, unloading, and storage.
- Manage the deployment and maintenance of port equipment (cranes, forklifts, etc.).
- Respond to operational incidents, emergencies, and security breaches.
- Liaise with shipping agents, terminal operators, and customs officials.
- Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations and port safety standards.
