ROV Pilot/Technician
This role is ideal for individuals fascinated by cutting-edge underwater technology and who thrive on solving complex technical problems in dynamic, challenging environments. It offers the thrill of operating advanced robotics in the deep sea, contributing to vital industries, but requires significant personal sacrifice due to extended offshore deployments and demanding work conditions.”
About This Role
Operates Remotely Operated Vehicles to conduct visual inspections and sonar mapping in deep water.
A Day in the Life
A ROV Pilot/Technician spends their day operating and maintaining Remotely Operated Vehicles, often offshore. This involves pre-dive checks, piloting the ROV for inspections or data collection, monitoring sensor feedback, and performing troubleshooting and repairs on the equipment.
- Conduct pre-dive and post-dive checks and calibrations of ROV systems and sensors.
- Pilot ROVs for underwater inspections of pipelines, cables, and structures.
- Monitor real-time video feeds, sonar data, and other sensor outputs.
- Perform routine maintenance and preventative repairs on ROV components and associated equipment.
- Troubleshoot electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical issues with ROVs.
- Document operational logs, inspection reports, and maintenance records.
- Assist with deployment and recovery of ROV systems from vessels.
- Collaborate with survey teams, engineers, and project managers on data acquisition.
Work Environment
Work is primarily conducted offshore on vessels or oil rigs, often in remote locations. The environment can be demanding, involving long hours, exposure to various weather conditions, and working in confined spaces. It requires precision and focus in a high-stakes setting.
Typical hours: 60h/week · WLB score 4/10 · COMMON overtime
Work-life balance can be challenging due to extended periods offshore, irregular shifts, and demanding operational schedules. Time off between rotations is crucial.
