Offshore welder

MEDIUM DemandLOW AI RiskSTABLE in SL

Offshore Welder represents the pinnacle of the welding trade — the most technically demanding, highest-paid welding role available. For Sri Lankan welders willing to invest in the certifications and handle the rotation lifestyle, it represents a transformative income opportunity. The 28-days-on, 28-days-off rotation means significant time with family between rotations, and the financial rewards are substantial. This is not an entry-level career — it requires years of onshore certification building — but the endpoint is worth the journey.

A Day in the Life

You perform structural and pipeline welding on offshore oil and gas platforms, marine vessels, and subsea structures — working in one of the most technically demanding and well-compensated welding environments in the world.

  • Perform certified groove and fillet welds to ASME IX and AWS D1.1 on offshore structures
  • Weld pipe joints to API 1104 or ASME B31.3 pipeline welding code
  • Work in confined spaces, at height, and in all positions including overhead
  • Coordinate with NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) inspectors for weld quality verification
  • Follow permit-to-work (PTW) and hot work permit procedures strictly
  • Operate in ATEX (explosive atmosphere) zones with flammable gas hazard protocols
  • Perform underwater welding support (hyperbaric welding) in some specialised roles
  • Maintain detailed work records and comply with offshore quality management systems

Work Environment

FIELDTeam: MEDIUMUNIFORMRemote: NONE

Offshore oil and gas platforms, FPSOs (Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessels), marine pipeline barges, and shipyards. Sri Lankan offshore welders typically work on rotation (28 days on / 28 days off) in Gulf platforms (Saudi Aramco, ADNOC), Indian offshore fields, or Southeast Asian LNG infrastructure.

Typical hours: 60h/week · WLB score 4/10 · COMMON overtime

Offshore rotation means 28 days away from family, working 10–12 hour shifts every day on the platform. Then 28 days fully home with family. The extended home leave compensates, but the separation is psychologically demanding for many.

Market Outlook

STABLE

Most offshore welders from Sri Lanka work internationally — this is essentially a gateway to Gulf and global employment. Very few offshore welding opportunities exist within SL itself (primarily Sri Lanka Navy vessel maintenance). The career requires leaving SL for rotation work.

Job Security (SL)

HIGH

Offshore welding environments are too complex, confined, and variable for robotic automation. The extreme difficulty of welding conditions offshore means certified human welders remain irreplaceable.

Burnout Causes

28-day separation from familyExtreme working conditions (heat, height, confined space)High-consequence pressure vessel and pipeline weldingMonotony of offshore platform environment

Physical Health Risks

Fume inhalation in confined platform spacesWorking at height over waterBurns and electrical hazards in marine environmentMusculoskeletal strain from sustained welding positionsExplosion and fire risk in ATEX zones

Mental Health Risks

Family separation affecting relationshipsPsychological pressure in high-consequence welding environmentLimited social life during rotation periods

How to Mitigate

  • Obtain ASME IX and API 1104 — these are the credentials that unlock Gulf offshore employment
  • BOSIET certificate is mandatory for any offshore work — complete it before applying
  • Maintain certifications continuously — lapses prevent re-employment
