Interior Decorator / Set Designer

MEDIUM DemandLOW AI RiskGROWING in SL

Interior decoration and set design is for the visually attuned creator who finds as much satisfaction in the execution as the concept — who can move from a client sketch to a completed room or set with equal skill in aesthetics and logistics. In Sri Lanka, the growing luxury market is a real opportunity.

About This Role

Designing visual spaces for buildings or film/theater sets.

A Day in the Life

You design and style interior spaces or create immersive set environments for events, film, TV, or theatre — translating client briefs into spatial concepts that combine aesthetics, function, and storytelling. In Sri Lanka, the role spans luxury hospitality design to corporate office fitouts and event staging.

  • Meet clients to understand brief, budget, and aesthetic preferences
  • Develop mood boards and concept presentations
  • Create space plans and layout drawings in AutoCAD or SketchUp
  • Select furniture, fixtures, materials, colours, and decor elements
  • Prepare 3D renderings to present design concepts to clients
  • Manage vendor relationships — furniture suppliers, fabric houses, contractors
  • Coordinate on-site installation and styling
  • Visit sites to oversee works and ensure alignment with design vision
  • Manage project budgets and timelines
  • Source props and set dressing elements for film, TV, or event productions

Work Environment

FIELDTeam: SMALLCASUALRemote: MEDIUM

A mix of studio/office-based design work and active site visits to residential projects, commercial fitouts, hotels, or event venues. Set design for film and events is intensely physical — building sets, sourcing props, and managing installation teams. Sri Lanka's growing luxury hotel market and apartment developments provide strong project flow.

Typical hours: 48h/week · WLB score 6/10 · IRREGULAR overtime

Project deadlines and installation periods can be intense and irregular. Event set designers often work through nights before major events. Otherwise, the work is flexible with a mix of studio time and site visits. Freelance and studio owners have the most schedule flexibility.

  • Diversify across residential, commercial, and events to reduce cyclical risk
  • Maintain clear client contracts covering scope, payment milestones, and change orders
  • Network with architects, real estate agents, and hotel operators for referral pipeline
  • Invest in high-quality renders — presentation quality directly affects client conversion
  • Wear appropriate PPE (hard hat, safety shoes) during construction site visits
