Founder / Startup CEO
If you are driven to solve a problem no one has solved yet, energised by uncertainty rather than paralysed by it, and willing to bet years of your life on your conviction — founding a startup may be the most fulfilling path available. In Sri Lanka, the ecosystem is young enough that early movers can define entire categories.”
About This Role
Identifies a market gap and builds a scalable business model from the ground up, leading vision and growth.
A Day in the Life
You build a company from scratch — setting vision and strategy, recruiting early team members, pitching investors, and making rapid decisions across product, finance, and operations. No two days look the same.
- Define product roadmap and strategic priorities for the quarter
- Meet with co-founders and department leads for stand-ups
- Review burn rate, runway metrics, and P&L with CFO or finance lead
- Pitch to angel investors, VCs, or accelerator program managers
- Conduct user interviews or review customer feedback with product team
- Hire and onboard key talent; manage early team culture
- Negotiate with vendors, partners, or potential acquirers
- Represent the startup at industry events, demo days, and media appearances
- Resolve cross-functional conflicts and unblock the team
- Review and approve marketing, PR, and communications strategy
Work Environment
Fast-paced, high-ambiguity startup environment. Early days may be a co-working space or home office; as the company scales you move into proper offices. Culture is driven by the founder's values — Sri Lanka's startup hubs include Hatch, ICTA, and Dialog Playground in Colombo.
Typical hours: 60h/week · WLB score 3/10 · COMMON overtime
Founding a startup demands extreme time commitment, especially in the 0-to-1 phase. 60-80 hour weeks are common. Weekends blur into workdays. Work-life balance improves significantly as the company scales and leadership is delegated, but remains demanding throughout.
