About This Role
Uses advanced electronic scanning tools to troubleshoot complex engine and electronic control unit (ECU) faults.
A Day in the Life
You diagnose vehicle faults using electronic scan tools and system-level analysis, pinpointing issues across engine, transmission, ABS, and electronic control systems to guide accurate repairs.
- Connect OBD-II/OBD scanners and retrieve live data and fault codes
- Interpret DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) across CAN bus systems
- Test electronic control units (ECU), sensors, and actuators
- Perform visual inspections of wiring harnesses and connector integrity
- Use oscilloscopes and multimeters for electrical fault tracing
- Run vehicle through dynamic tests and road assessments to verify symptoms
- Prepare written diagnostic reports for repair technicians
- Advise service advisors on repair scope, parts, and estimated labour
Work Environment
Automotive workshop diagnostic bay — controlled indoor environment with vehicle lifts, diagnostic workstations, and specialist scan tools. Senior diagnostic technicians often work in dedicated diagnostic bays separate from general workshop traffic. In Sri Lanka, vehicle importers and authorised service centres invest in factory-level diagnostic equipment.
