A Day in the Life
A Deep-Sea / Offshore Operations Specialist manages the technical and operational aspects of large fishing vessels engaged in multi-day or deep-sea expeditions. This includes advanced navigation, sonar operation, crew coordination, and ensuring compliance with international maritime and fisheries regulations.
- Operate and interpret advanced sonar, radar, and navigation systems to locate fish stocks
- Plan and execute multi-day deep-sea fishing expeditions, considering weather and oceanographic data
- Oversee the deployment, retrieval, and maintenance of specialized deep-sea fishing gear
- Manage and coordinate the vessel crew, assigning tasks and ensuring safety protocols are followed
- Monitor vessel systems, including propulsion, power generation, and refrigeration for catch preservation
- Ensure compliance with national and international fisheries regulations, quotas, and reporting requirements
- Analyze catch data and operational efficiency to optimize future fishing strategies
- Communicate with shore-based management regarding operational status, catch, and logistics
Work Environment
Working on large fishing vessels in open ocean conditions, often for extended periods (weeks to months). Exposed to harsh weather, constant motion, and the physical demands of managing heavy equipment and large catches. The environment is noisy, can have strong odors, and requires constant vigilance.
Typical hours: 70h/week · WLB score 3/10 · REGULAR overtime
Extremely challenging work-life balance due to long voyages (weeks to months), demanding work schedule, and limited communication with shore. Extended periods away from home are common.
