Automation specialist

Automation Specialist is for technically-minded people who love electronics, programming, and industrial systems. You will be the person a factory calls when their production line stops — and the one who gets it running again. One of the most future-proof trades in manufacturing, with genuine skills scarcity in Sri Lanka creating strong salary premiums. If you enjoy combining hands-on electrical work with programming logic, this is an outstanding career.

A Day in the Life

You program, install, commission, and maintain industrial automation systems — PLCs, HMIs, conveyor controls, and robotic cells — keeping manufacturing and processing plants running efficiently.

  • Program and configure PLCs (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi) for production automation
  • Install and commission HMI (Human Machine Interface) panels for operators
  • Diagnose and repair faults in automated production lines and conveyor systems
  • Integrate sensors, actuators, drives, and control systems into automation solutions
  • Maintain and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) on motors
  • Write and update control logic documentation for plant maintenance records
  • Perform preventive maintenance on automated systems to minimise downtime
  • Work with production teams to optimise automation parameters for efficiency

Work Environment

FIELDTeam: SMALLUNIFORMRemote: LOW

Industrial manufacturing and processing environments — garment factories, food production plants, rubber and plastics manufacturers, and port logistics facilities. In Sri Lanka, automation specialists work in export processing zones (Katunayake, Biyagama, Koggala), large food manufacturers (CBL, Nestlé, Fonterra), and the CEB power generation sector.

Typical hours: 48h/week · WLB score 6/10 · COMMON overtime

Shift work is common in manufacturing environments. Production line breakdowns require immediate response regardless of time of day — on-call responsibility is part of the role.

Physical Health Risks

Electrical hazards in industrial control panelsNoise exposure in manufacturing environmentsHeat in factory environments

Mental Health Risks

High-pressure production downtime situationsResponsibility for entire production line functioning

How to Mitigate

  • Pursue Siemens or Allen-Bradley PLC certification — these credentials travel globally
  • Learn SCADA and industrial networking for higher-level control systems roles
  • Singapore and Australia offer very strong career pathways for qualified automation engineers

Is This Career For You?

Technology or Physical Science A/L graduates with strong electronics and mathematics ability. Suits hands-on students who also enjoy logic and programming. An excellent pathway for those who want engineering-level work without a full four-year degree — NVQ Level 5 and PLC training can get you there.
