About This Role
Handles passenger check-in, boarding, baggage, and ramp operations at the airport. Employed by SriLankan Airlines Ground Handling or GlobeGround Lanka. Shift work including nights and weekends. Entry via A/L with good English; IATA ground operations certification is an advantage.
A Day in the Life
An Airline Ground Staff's day is dynamic, involving direct interaction with passengers for check-in and boarding, or handling baggage and aircraft loading on the ramp. It's a fast-paced environment requiring efficiency, customer service skills, and adherence to strict timelines.
- Assist passengers with check-in, baggage drop, and seat assignments.
- Verify travel documents and ensure compliance with immigration/customs regulations.
- Issue boarding passes and guide passengers to their gates.
- Handle passenger inquiries, complaints, and special requests.
- Coordinate with cabin crew and flight operations for on-time departures.
- Load and unload passenger baggage and cargo onto aircraft (Ramp Agent).
- Operate ground support equipment (e.g., baggage tugs, pushback tractors) (Ramp Agent).
- Ensure safety and security procedures are followed on the ramp and in the terminal.
Work Environment
Working primarily at the airport terminal (check-in, gates) or on the aircraft ramp. The terminal is busy and customer-facing, while the ramp is an outdoor, noisy, and fast-paced environment exposed to weather conditions.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 5/10 · COMMON overtime
Shift work, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and public holidays, is standard. This can make it challenging to maintain a consistent social life and personal commitments.
