About This Role
Evaluates tea liquor for appearance, aroma, flavour, and body to classify teas for auction at the Colombo Tea Auction (largest in the world) or direct export. Requires years of sensory training. Employed by brokers (Forbes & Walker, Asia Siyaka), exporters, and buyer agents.
A Day in the Life
Evaluate the quality, flavour, and market value of Ceylon tea through systematic sensory analysis at Colombo Tea Auction or tea company buying department, providing grade descriptions and price guidance.
- Cup and taste 200–400 tea samples daily using standard liquoring and tasting protocol
- Assess tea quality parameters: appearance, liquor colour, aroma, strength, and flavour
- Record grade descriptions and price valuations for auction catalogues
- Advise buyers on lots to purchase based on quality-price assessment
- Prepare tea blending specifications for tea bag manufacturers
- Liaise with factories on quality improvement based on defects identified
- Monitor global Ceylon tea price trends at Colombo Tea Auction
Work Environment
Tasting room environment — clean, well-lit, temperature-controlled with rows of standardised tea tasting cups. Colombo offices at tea broking companies in Colombo 2/3 area near the World Trade Centre.
Typical hours: 40h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Daytime office hours in Colombo. Auction weeks can be intense but generally good work-life balance. Senior tasters enjoy high prestige and good lifestyle.
