Special Needs Teachers are the most essential educators in any school system — they reach the children who would otherwise be left behind. In Sri Lanka, where SEN provision is still developing, these teachers are genuine pioneers breaking barriers and opening pathways for children with autism, learning disabilities, and developmental differences. If you are driven by the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow, this is the most meaningful teaching career available.”
About This Role
Provide specialised educational support to primary-age children with learning disabilities, developmental delays, autism spectrum conditions, physical disabilities, and other special educational needs (SEN). Design and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs), adapt curriculum content, and work collaboratively with parents, classroom teachers, and therapists in Sri Lankan schools.
A Day in the Life
A Special Needs Teacher starts the day preparing adapted materials for individual students, then works in small groups or one-on-one sessions using specialised techniques (ABA, TEACCH, sensory integration). The day involves coordinating with classroom teachers, communicating with parents, writing IEP progress notes, and adapting lesson content to meet each child's unique learning needs.
- Conduct individual and small-group SEN teaching sessions
- Implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and track progress
- Adapt mainstream curriculum content for students with diverse needs
- Apply evidence-based interventions (ABA, TEACCH, sensory strategies)
- Communicate daily with parents about child progress and home strategies
- Coordinate with classroom teachers on inclusive education support
- Write IEP reviews and progress reports
- Liaise with speech therapists, occupational therapists, and psychologists
Work Environment
Specialised SEN classrooms, resource rooms, or one-on-one therapy spaces within schools. Some SEN teachers work across multiple schools. International schools have well-resourced SEN departments. Government SEN schools (for deaf, blind, and intellectually disabled students) are specialist institutions.
Typical hours: 42h/week · WLB score 6/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
School hours provide structure but IEP writing and parent communication add evening work. Emotionally demanding role requiring active self-care. Physical demands of working with children who may have challenging behaviour.
