If the idea of being the person responsible for the stability of Sri Lanka's entire national electricity grid — in real-time, around the clock — excites rather than intimidates you, SCADA engineering is one of the most elite and critical roles in the country.”
About This Role
Operates and maintains SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems for the national grid at the CEB National Control Centre, Kotugoda. Monitors generation, transmission switching, and load balancing in real time. Specialised role requiring EE degree and SCADA training.
A Day in the Life
Monitor and control the national electricity grid from the SCADA control centre, managing real-time grid state, generator dispatch instructions, and automated control systems to maintain power system stability.
- Monitor real-time grid frequency (50Hz), voltage profiles, and power flows on SCADA
- Issue dispatch instructions to power plant operators to balance generation and load
- Manage automatic generation control (AGC) and frequency response reserves
- Coordinate planned and forced outages with transmission and distribution engineers
- Analyse grid disturbances (faults, trips) and coordinate restoration sequences
- Maintain control room logbooks and produce shift reports
- Test communication links with plant operators and substation remote terminal units (RTUs)
Work Environment
National Control Centre (Kotugoda) or area control centres — high-tech SCADA control room environment, 24/7 shift coverage. Sri Lanka's grid is controlled from this facility.
