About This Role
Oversees daily garment factory production — line balancing, output targets, WIP control, and quality compliance. Reports to the GM Operations. Typically promoted from IE or line supervisor roles after 6–8 years. Major employers: MAS Holdings, Brandix, Hirdaramani.
A Day in the Life
Oversees the daily production output of a garment factory floor — managing line efficiencies, worker output, WIP (Work In Progress) control, quality compliance, and delivery to shipment deadlines.
- Review daily production output reports versus targets for each line
- Walk the factory floor to identify bottlenecks and resolve issues in real time
- Chair morning production meetings with IE, QC, and line supervisors
- Analyse efficiency data and adjust line balancing to hit daily targets
- Coordinate with merchandising on delivery priorities and style changes
- Review WIP (cut, sew, finish) and escalate delays to GM Operations
- Manage overtime decisions and communicate with HR on shift staffing
- Approve machine maintenance schedules without disrupting production
Work Environment
Large garment factory floor managing 300–1,500 sewing machines and workers. Loud, fast-paced, and hot environment. Production manager typically walks 5–10 km daily across the factory. EPZ factories in Katunayake, Biyagama, and Horana are the main locations.
Typical hours: 55h/week · WLB score 4/10 · COMMON overtime
One of the most demanding roles in the garment sector. 6-day weeks are standard. During shipment crunch periods, overnight factory operation is common. Physical and mental stamina is essential.
