A Day in the Life
Manage human resources, industrial relations, and worker welfare functions for a Regional Plantation Company (RPC), overseeing estate labour compliance, worker housing, wage negotiations with trade unions, and EETCA act compliance.
- Manage wage calculations and payroll for thousands of estate workers under EETCA
- Handle grievances, disciplinary hearings, and Labour Department inquiries
- Negotiate collective agreements with tea plantation trade unions (LJEWU, CWC)
- Oversee worker housing, crèche, and estate welfare facilities
- Ensure compliance with Wages Board orders and Plantation Housing Authority requirements
- Conduct worker welfare and rights training programs
- Coordinate with Plantation Human Development Trust (PHDT) on welfare programs
Work Environment
Office-based at RPC headquarters (Colombo or Kandy) with regular visits to estates. Heavy emphasis on labour law compliance, trade union relations, and worker welfare in a unionised workforce.
Typical hours: 47h/week · WLB score 6/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Office-based with structured hours. Trade union negotiations or labour disputes can create demanding periods. Estate visits require some hill country travel.
