About This Role
Based at Sri Lanka Embassies and High Commissions in Gulf countries and key migrant destinations — handles distress cases, legal representation for workers in labour disputes, repatriation of workers in crisis, and coordination with destination-country Labour Ministries. Foreign Service career path; appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A Day in the Life
Provide welfare, consular, and labour rights assistance to Sri Lankan migrant workers in distress at Sri Lanka Diplomatic Missions in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and other destination countries.
- Receive and assess distress cases from Sri Lankan workers (abuse, non-payment of wages, imprisonment)
- Coordinate with local police, courts, and employers to resolve worker disputes
- Manage Sri Lanka Mission's welfare shelter for distressed domestic workers
- Process repatriation documents and coordinate flights for workers returning to Sri Lanka
- Conduct consular visits to Sri Lankan workers imprisoned in host country
- Liaise with SLBFE Colombo office on individual worker case status
- Maintain case management records and submit reports to Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Work Environment
Sri Lanka Embassy or High Commission office in Gulf or other migrant destination countries. Requires direct field visits to police stations, courts, hospitals, and employer premises.
Typical hours: 50h/week · WLB score 5/10 · COMMON overtime
Demanding role — crises can occur at any time. Living overseas with allowances compensates. Emotionally challenging but deeply meaningful.
