About This Role
Designs gold, silver, and platinum jewelry incorporating gemstones. Uses CAD/CAM software (Rhino 3D, Matrix) for modern designs, or traditional hand-sketching. Designs marketed to local retailers, export buyers, and through own workshops. Growing demand for custom bridal jewelry.
A Day in the Life
Design jewellery pieces — rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets — for Sri Lankan gem and jewellery companies, combining traditional Sinhalese and Tamil design motifs with contemporary aesthetics for local and export markets.
- Sketch jewellery concepts by hand and develop designs using CAD software (RhinoGold, MatrixGold)
- Create 3D models for client approval and wax casting preparation
- Select gemstones from inventory to match design specifications
- Liaise with goldsmiths and setters on production of approved designs
- Develop seasonal collections for retail or export catalogues
- Present designs to clients and incorporate feedback
- Research global jewellery trends (international trade fairs, fashion media)
Work Environment
Design studio or office setting at a jewellery company or workshop. Creative environment combining drawing, digital design, and direct interaction with gem and metal workshops.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
