Investment Analyst / Fund Manager
Managing a real investment portfolio is the pinnacle of investment analysis — you're no longer just recommending, you're deciding. In Sri Lanka, fund managers operate in a market that is small enough to understand deeply but complex enough to offer genuine intellectual challenges. CFA is non-negotiable as the entry credential. If you have the analytical rigour, the emotional discipline to hold positions through volatility, and the communication skills to retain investor confidence during downturns, fund management offers one of the most intellectually rewarding finance careers available.”
About This Role
Manages the investment of bank capital and insurance premiums in financial markets to maximize returns.
A Day in the Life
An Investment Analyst / Fund Manager is a hybrid role found in Sri Lanka's smaller asset management firms where the same professional both conducts research and actively manages a live investment portfolio. They analyse potential investments, make buy/sell decisions for client portfolios, execute portfolio rebalancing, monitor mandate compliance against SEC unit trust rules, and report performance to management and investors. The combination of analysis and portfolio management responsibility makes this among the most technically demanding roles in Sri Lanka's capital markets.
- Review morning market briefings and assess overnight developments affecting the portfolio
- Analyse new investment opportunities and update financial models for portfolio positions
- Make buy/sell decisions for equity and fixed income portfolio within fund mandate limits
- Execute portfolio rebalancing in response to market movements or fund flows
- Monitor SEC unit trust investment limits — sector concentration, single-stock ceilings
- Prepare daily and monthly portfolio performance reports vs benchmark
- Present investment strategy and quarterly performance to management and investors
- Attend listed company results briefings and AGMs for portfolio companies
Work Environment
Asset management firms in Sri Lanka are small by global standards — a fund manager often works in a team of 2–5 investment professionals managing unit trust funds and institutional mandates. The CSE trading environment shapes the day's rhythm. High accountability for portfolio performance is constant. Pressure peaks during earnings seasons and market crises.
Typical hours: 50h/week · WLB score 5/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Portfolio management involves constant market awareness that blurs work-life boundaries. Market volatility periods create intensive decision-making demands. Reporting periods and investor presentations add to the workload. Overall WLB is moderate — better than investment banking but more demanding than back-office finance.

Market Outlook
STABLE
Sri Lanka's unit trust AUM is growing but the total number of fund manager positions remains small — perhaps 20–30 active fund managers across all licensed fund management firms. Post-2022 recovery is rebuilding fund performance and AUM, supporting modest hiring activity. CFA designation is effectively mandatory for progression to this role.
Hiring: LOW
STABLE
Active fund management globally faces structural pressure from passive (index) investing. However, skilled active managers managing non-mainstream strategies (emerging markets, impact, alternatives) remain in strong demand. CFA charterholder fund managers have strong international mobility particularly to Singapore, Australia, and the UAE.

Quantitative screening and portfolio analytics are increasingly AI-assisted. However, portfolio manager judgment, client relationship management, and investment committee communication are resistant to automation. Active managers who leverage AI tools to enhance their research will outperform those who ignore them.
