A Day in the Life
Buy and sell gemstones — rough and cut — at the Ratnapura gem pits, Beruwala markets, and international gem fairs, building a profitable trading portfolio of Sri Lankan sapphires, rubies, and other coloured stones.
- Evaluate rough and cut gemstones offered by miners and middlemen (handayas)
- Negotiate purchase prices based on quality, weight, and market demand
- Sort and catalogue purchased inventory by species, colour, and size
- Market gems to international buyers via gem fairs (Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tucson)
- Correspond with overseas buyers and arrange gem exports with NGJA documentation
- Monitor global coloured stone market prices and trends
- Manage cash flow and gem inventory valuation
Work Environment
Mobile role — gem pits in Ratnapura and Elahera, Beruwala gem market, own office or showroom. Involves international travel to gem fairs in Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Tucson (USA).
