A Day in the Life
You examine gemstones and jewellery pieces to determine their authenticity, quality, and market value using specialised instruments. Sri Lanka is the world's leading blue sapphire source, making this a culturally significant and internationally respected profession.
- Receive and log gemstone or jewellery submissions from clients
- Examine stones under loupe and microscope for inclusions, cut, colour, and clarity
- Use refractometer, spectrometer, and UV lamp to identify gem species
- Weigh gems on precision scales and record carat weight
- Research current market prices and auction results for comparable stones
- Prepare and issue valuation certificates with grading details
- Advise clients on buying, selling, or insuring gems and jewellery
- Verify NGJA certifications and country-of-origin documentation
- Liaise with export companies on customs valuation documentation
- Stay updated on global gem prices (Rapaport, GIA market reports)
Work Environment
