A Day in the Life
Food Biotechnologists apply biological sciences to improve food production — developing novel food products, enhancing food safety through biotechnology, and researching fermentation, enzymes, and food genomics.
- Conduct laboratory experiments on food processing and preservation
- Develop and test new food formulations using biotechnology
- Analyse microbial cultures and fermentation processes
- Review and interpret research data
- Collaborate with food production teams on scale-up
- Prepare technical reports and scientific papers
- Ensure compliance with food safety regulations (SLS, Codex Alimentarius)
Work Environment
Food science laboratory and pilot plant environment. Highly regulated with food safety protocols. Mix of bench research and pilot production.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 8/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Generally good WLB. Product launch periods can be demanding. Lab work is structured.
