Ideal for science-oriented students who love textiles and want a technical role with real impact. Fabric technologists are the hidden gatekeepers of garment quality. The growing sustainability agenda makes this a future-proof specialisation. Quieter, lab-based environment is a strong appeal for those who prefer precision over the chaos of the factory floor.”
About This Role
Evaluates fabric quality, tests for shrinkage, pilling, colour fastness, and tensile strength per AATCC/ISO standards. Sources fabric from local mills and international suppliers. Works in the material management department of garment exporters.
A Day in the Life
Tests and evaluates fabric quality — shrinkage, pilling, colour fastness, tensile strength, and buyer compliance — and sources fabrics from local mills and international suppliers to meet style requirements.
- Evaluate fabric swatch submissions from suppliers against buyer specifications
- Conduct lab tests: shrinkage (ISO 6330), pilling (Martindale), colour fastness (ISO 105)
- Source fabrics for new styles from local mills (Textured Jersey Lanka, Teejay) and overseas suppliers
- Review lab dip submissions for shade approval against buyer colour standards
- Maintain fabric swatch library and approved supplier list
- Resolve fabric quality failures during production (running shade, shrinkage variance)
- Attend material review meetings with merchandising and design teams
- Prepare fabric cost analysis for style costing
Work Environment
Fabric testing laboratory combined with materials office. Uses textile testing equipment (tensile tester, pilling tester, washing machine for shrinkage, spectrophotometer for colour). Requires access to factory sample fabric swatches.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Good work-life balance. Lab-based role with more predictable hours than production. Occasional pressure when fabric failures cause production delays.

Market Outlook
STABLE
Consistent demand in large garment factories with in-house materials labs. Growing importance as buyers increasingly mandate fabric sustainability testing (recycled content verification, chemical compliance — REACH, OEKO-TEX). Local mills (Textured Jersey Lanka, Teejay) also hire fabric technologists.

Business Ideas
- Independent fabric testing lab serving small garment factories
- Fabric sourcing agency connecting Sri Lankan factories with overseas mills
- Sustainability compliance consultancy (OEKO-TEX, GOTS)
Side Income Ideas
SGS and Intertek are the dominant third-party testing firms; small independent testing labs serve factories that cannot afford big-firm fees.
